Continuing Medical Education

Message from the Associate Dean

Welcome to the Stanford University School of Medicine Center for Continiuing Medical Education!

A New Approach

It is widely acknowledged that the present system of delivering continuing medical education (CME) does not optimally prepare practicing physicians to deliver high quality, cost-effective care.  At Stanford, we are engaged in constructing a fundamentally new approach to CME.

This approach includes three fundamental elements: (1) reduction of bias though cessation of designated commercial support, (2) design and implementation of curricula enriched by innovative educational technologies (e.g. simulation) and modern pedagogical methods (e.g. interactivity), and (3) enhanced focus upon quality of care and patient safety.

As the nation’s first school of medicine to prohibit designated commercial support, our overarching goal is to demonstrate that a fundamentally different model of CME can be made successful at a leading university and thereby help to catalyze a widespread transition of the national CME curricula. Our programs aim to systematically improve professional education in the context of our changing health care system, and ultimately improve the quality of health care.
